nbn ™ Moving Guide

Moving residence or business premises can be stressful. Following these tips can make getting your Internet up and running a lot easier.

Pro tip: TL; DR

When moving, leave any equipment with an nbn ™ logo on it for the next occupant. You can't use it at your new place. If in doubt, if the equipment is branded Arris, Alcatel or Netcomm, it probably needs to stay put!

Relocating your service

There is no specific concept of relocation on the nbn network. You should order a new service at a new location (as identified by the nbn LOC identifier) and then when you are ready, terminate the existing service at the former location. If your new place is delivered over a different nbn access method, you'll need to reconfigure your router.

nbn equipment belongs to nbn and is fixed

Not all locations have equipment supplied by nbn. If you are moving to or leaving premises that are serviced using HFC, fibre to the premises, fibre to the curb or fixed wireless, then your location has special equipment owned by nbn.

nbn equipment is tied to an individual location (LOC number) through its MAC address and serial number and cannot be used at another location. If you take it with you, you won't do anything other than inconvenience the people moving to your former location. This equipment is also the property of nbn. Accordingly, removing or relocating this equipment is not only pointless, because the property belongs to nbnco limited, it may constitute a criminal offense.

Identifying nbn equipment to leave behind

The following images show you examples of the sort of equipment you must leave behind at your former business or home. All images are property of nbnco limited reproduced under license.

Pro tip: Moving into a new house, office or development?

Make sure the builder or developer has followed nbn's new developments process and has made arrangements for nbn equipment to be installed. If you're managing this process yourself, please visit the nbn new developments website. If you neglect to do so, it might take months to organise your new connection. Make sure the local government also notifies nbn when your sub-division or new development is created.

When to terminate or connect

It takes only a few minutes to terminate your connection, but it might take a few days or a few weeks to connect your new location. You should place you order to connect your new location as soon as the previous occupant has vacated to avoid any interruption or inconvenience. Make sure you have proof of occupancy documents such as lease, contract for sale or land rates available in case of any issues with nbn's location database.

Move early, but don't move often

Before you move, try and Konmari ™ your life. Organise your movers on Mondays or Tuesdays, which are the cheapest days. Give to charity or dispose of whatever does not spark joy. Put your pillows in plastic garbage bags, wrap your bed in plastic and your plates in old paper bills that you never want to see again.
